Subject Verb – Agreement

Subject verb agreement adalah persesuaian antara verb dengan subject dalam hal number yaitu singular (tunggal) atau plural (jamak). Subject dapat berupa noun, pronoun atau konstruksi lain yang berakting sebagai noun seperti gerund dan infinitive. Pada dasarnya singular subject(subject tunggal menggunakan singular verb (kata kerja tunggal), sedangkan plural subject(subject jamak menggunakan plural verb atau kata kerja jamak.

Singular à she/he/it menggunakan verb ies/es/is
Plural     à they/we/i/you menggunakan verb 1
Contoh :
1. thatha go to school
   ( singular karena ada kata he dan verb dari kata go menggunakan tambahan kata es)
2. they play vollyball
    ( plural karena ada kata they dan play nya menggunakan verb 1)

EACH AND EVERY 

Untuk kalimat yang diawali “ Each / Every “ diikuti dengan “ Singular Noun “ lalu “ Singular Verb “.

Each/Every + Singular Noun + Singular Verb

every girls and boys is in the class

each people needs hobby

EXCEPTION : Every and each are always followed immediately by singular nouns. In this case, even then there are two (or more) nouns connected by and, the verb is singular.

PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

Untuk subjek yang dikuti “Prepositional Phrase”, maka untuk menentukan Verb-nya  Singular / Plural itu ditentukan oleh Subjeknya.


the historical book on that table is interesting

The leather jackets on the cabinets are mine.

(The historical = Singular Subject, is = Singular Verb )
(The leather = Plural Subject, are = Plural Verb )


GERUND
Jika “ Gerund “ sebagai Subjek, maka Verb-nya Singular.
(a) Growing flower is her hobby.

A gerund used as the subject of sentence takes a singular verb.

SOME OF, A LOT OF, MOST OF, A HALF OF

Jika diikuti “Singular Noun”, maka Verb-nya  Singular .
Jika diikuti “Plural Noun”, maka Verb-nya Plural.


(a) The politician, along with the newsmen, is expected shortly.


(b) A car and a bike are my means of transportation.

(The politician = Singular Noun, is = Singular Verb )
(A car and a bike = Plural Noun, are = Plural Verb )

Selalu diikuti “ Plural Noun” dan Verb-nya Singular.

Ket: karena merupakan singular noun, maka verb yang digunakan singular. Approves merupakan singular dan approve merupakan plural.
